Buying Guide for KitchenAid Stand Mixers

1. Bowl Size:

Of course, the bigger the bowl, the larger batch it can handle. But the real big bowl of, let’s say, 10 quarts won’t work for a small job as its beater won’t reach well a small batch at the bottom of the bowl. The most selling right now is the 5-Quart bowl made of stainless steel.  Stainless steel is superior to plastic or glass when we whip cream or batch that should be kept cold.

2. Wattage:

Just like horsepower of a car engine, the higher the wattage, the greater the power and speed of the mixer as well as its price.  A high wattage mixer saves time and makes it possible to mix heavy and sticky batters.  It, therefore, can mix more effectively than the one of lower wattage. (Thinking about driving a car uphill, the one with more powerful engine will move on comfortably while it takes quite an effort for the less powerful one.)

For basic bakery cooking not much of bread, a mixer of 300 watts or up is recommended.

3. Life and Durability:

This is very important. How can we figure this out? The answer lies in user experience passing along.  Some say their KitchenAid mixers have been in use for 10-15 years. Some say it first belongs to grandma and it’s now his/hers. Even great chefs in big restaurants or hotels are confident to choose KitchenAid mixers for their kitchens. Likewise, why lots of bakery and cooking schools go for KitchenAid mixers? Think about the number of students and classes this appliance has to serve.  A school of vision surely find durable one to cope with such a high workload.

4. Product Materials:  Metal or Plastic?

Of course, metal is by far more sturdy and durable than plastic.  Structure of KitchenAid mixers is made entirely of metal.

5. Other Factors:

- Is it easy to use? The most easy use models are the two-speed models and the single switch models.
- Does it come with all necessary attachments like flat beater, wire whip, dough hook, splatter shield?
- Does it automatically shut off when working for too long or when motor is extremely heated?  This feature is available in Pro 500 plus and Pro 600.
- Any hub for additional attachments? This is not a MUST but a PLUS as some KitchenAid mixers can be adjusted to ice-cream maker, pasta sheeter, or meat grinder (WOW!) with additional attachments.
